43 years removed from their last New Jersey Legion State title game, Broad Street Park certainly made up for lost time. A three hour and twenty minute championship game ended in the most dramatic fashion.
After fouling off four straight pitches with the bases loaded, Kyle Harrington finally hit a ball fair. The hit, just so happened to be a game ending grand slam to seal a 6-4 BSP victory (see video below)
“I think it all led up to this,” Harrington told Rich Fisher of the Hamilton Pulse. “I think my 16 years of baseball all tops out at this.”
The timely bomb came a half inning after BSP was trailing by two runs. Broad Street Park loaded the bases through two walks and a hit batsman, and Harrington took care of the rest.
With its first state title since 1975, Post 313 will head to Purcellville, Virginia where it will take part in the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional. BSP will play Pennsylvania’s runner-up at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8.
